For anyone considering a Mac Studio for local LLMs, machine learning, development, or other AI workloads, the biggest question is not simply whether the M5 Ultra is faster. It is whether the additional compute and memory are worth the substantial jump in price.
Apple itself is positioning this generation of Mac Studio as its ultimate desktop for on-device AI. The M5 Max supports up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 614GB/s of memory bandwidth, while the M5 Ultra can scale to 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth. The $2,499 M5 Max Is an Interesting Entry Point

For general development, creative workloads, and smaller local AI models, this is a powerful machine. But 36GB of unified memory can quickly become the limiting factor if AI is your primary reason for buying a Mac Studio.
That is important because Apple silicon uses unified memory. The CPU and GPU share the same memory pool rather than having completely separate system RAM and GPU VRAM. For local AI workloads, this architecture makes higher-memory configurations particularly interesting because large models can take advantage of memory that would be extremely difficult or expensive to obtain as dedicated GPU VRAM in a conventional workstation.
The next step up costs $3,099 and gives you a 40-core GPU and 48GB of memory. Another $400 takes the machine to 64GB for $3,499.

The 128GB M5 Max Is Where Things Get Interesting for Local AI

However, this is also where the M5 Max becomes much more interesting as a dedicated local AI machine.
Apple says the M5 Max provides up to 614GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, and its 40-core GPU includes Neural Accelerators in every GPU core. Apple specifically highlights workloads including running LLMs and generating images and video locally.
Apple claims the new M5 Max can process LLM prompts in LM Studio up to 3.9 times faster than the M4 Max and up to 10.7 times faster than the M1 Max in its testing.
For AI developers, therefore, the $5,099 128GB configuration may be more meaningful than the base model.

Then Comes the Huge Jump to 256GB

Moving to 256GB of unified memory while retaining 1TB of storage raises the price to $10,799.

For most conventional desktop workloads, spending $4,000 primarily to reach this amount of memory would be difficult to justify.
AI changes the equation.

The M5 Ultra makes more sense when AI is one of the machine's primary purposes and GPU compute is important. Its 80-core GPU, Neural Accelerators, and enormous memory bandwidth give it significantly more headroom.
The higher-memory M5 Ultra configurations move into a different category entirely. A 256GB Mac Studio costing $10,799 is unlikely to appeal to a typical consumer, but it could make sense for researchers, AI developers, small teams, and businesses that would otherwise rely heavily on cloud GPU infrastructure.
Apple has gone even further than individual workstation performance. Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA support allow multiple Mac Studio systems to be clustered. Apple says a four-Mac Studio cluster can deliver up to three times the AI inference performance of a single system, while creating a much larger shared memory pool for demanding open-weight models.

Which Mac Studio Configuration Offers the Best Value?
There is no universal winner, but the pricing creates several particularly interesting configurations.
At $2,499, the base M5 Max provides the cheapest entry into the new Mac Studio generation.
At $3,499, the 64GB M5 Max looks much better suited to developers who want to experiment seriously with local AI without spending $5,000 or more.
At $5,099, the 128GB M5 Max provides substantially more memory and could be an excellent choice when model size matters more than maximum GPU performance.
But the $5,499 base M5 Ultra creates an interesting dilemma. For just $400 more than the 128GB M5 Max, you receive significantly more CPU and GPU resources and 1TB of storage, although memory falls from 128GB to 96GB.
The $6,799 36-core CPU/80-core GPU M5 Ultra may be the most compelling choice for users whose workloads fit within 96GB and who want maximum compute performance without crossing the $10,000 mark.
Above that, the $10,799 256GB M5 Ultra is a specialized AI workstation. Its value depends almost entirely on whether your workloads can actually take advantage of that enormous unified memory pool.
Final Thoughts
The new Mac Studio is no longer simply a high-end desktop for video editors, developers, and creative professionals. Apple is explicitly positioning it as a workstation for on-device AI development and inference.
